Van Hiele method of teaching geometry is based on a theory of the same name in which learning geometric concepts are assumed to be a function of experience and instruction rather than age, as Piagetian theory would claim. To test the effectiveness of this method, two groups of high school students were randomly selected, one of which was taught geometry with Van Hiele method while the other with the traditional method of teaching. Instruments used included the regularly teacher-made test of geometry and a specially constructed test of geometry with open questions. The results show that the experimental group benefitted from the use of the new method.
