Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between parenting styles and moral development and empathy, emphasizing the mediating role of executive functions.
Research Methodology: The method of the current research was structural equation correlation. The population of this research was all female teenagers aged 15-18 years old in Kerman City. Using the snowball sampling method, 250 people were selected as the research sample and the participants answered the questionnaires about parenting styles (Baumrind, 1971), empathy (Taheri et al., 1402), moral development (Manavi pour, 2013) and executive skills (Dawson and Gora, 2012). The collected data were analyzed through spss25 and Amos software.
Findings: The research findings showed that the relationship between parenting styles with moral development and empathy was significant. According to the fit indices of the model, the mediating role of executive functions in the relationship between parenting styles and moral development and empathy had a favorable fit. Also, the results of the Sobel test indicated that the mediating role of executive functions in the relationship between parenting styles and moral development was significant. Still, there was no significant relationship with empathy.
Conclusion: In general, it can be said that parenting styles can affect moral development through the promotion of executive functions, and parenting styles directly predict empathy. Therefore, according to the research results, it is suggested that parents influence the moral development of children through cognitive games that help to strengthen executive functions. Also, by using an authoritative style, cultivate more empathy in them.
