Investigating the Relationship of Cognitive Style with Motivational, Behavioral and Cognitive Aspects of "Information Seeking" in High School Students

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive style and various aspects of "information seeking" behavior. Here, “cognitive style” refers not only to “information processing strategies” (Deep, step by step and objective) but also "regulation strategies" (internal, external and decentralized). Both of these aspects were measured using a cognitive style scale. Besides, motivational, behavioral and cognitive aspects of "information seeking" behavior were measured employing a researcher-made scale. From among all high school students in Isfahan, 100 participants were selected using stratified sampling. The results showed that deep information processing strategies did not have any significant relationship with any aspects of information seeking behavior. While step by step processing strategy, objective processing strategy, and internal regulation strategy correlated strongly with all aspects of information seeking. Furthermore, external regulation strategy had a significant relationship just with the motivational aspect of information seeking and decentralized regulation strategy correlated strongly with the behavioral aspect of information seeking. Also, the results obtained through regression analysis showed that objective information processing strategy and decentralized regulation strategy had the most leading roles in predicting variance in information seeking valuation and regulation, respectively.
