Abstract

To deal with the emotional problems of students in an Islamic country like Iran, we need a culture-based program which takes into account concepts and guidelines of Quran and Islam. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of self-forgiveness group counseling program based on Quranic concepts on depression in first grade male students of high school. Based on the results of a mental health screening test administered to high school students in Isfahan city, students who had symptoms of depression were invited to a counseling center. In an experimental design, 20 high school students with high depression symptoms were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Self-forgiveness group counseling program was administered in 8 sessions for participants in the experimental group.  Beck depression inventory was used as pretest and posttest. The data was analyzed using the statistical method of covariance. The experimental group post-test scores of depression were significantly decreased. It seems that forgiveness group counseling program based on Quranic concepts was effective in overcoming emotional problems of boys in early adolescent period. This study showed that it is possible to use Islamic and cultural resources in group therapy context.
